David Brooks: Sarah Palin Has "Never Showed Interest In Governing"
Syndicated columnist Mark Shields and New York Times columnist David Brooks discuss Sarah Palin threatening to run against Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) on Friday's edition of a web-only panel discussion that airs after the television broadcast of PBS NewsHour.
HARI SREENIVASAN, PBS: Up in Alaska, we've got Sarah Palin, Mark Begich, kind of going toe-to-toe on Twitter, on Facebook, on elsewhere. I think his tweet, I think I pulled it up: "I'd be happy to compare my record of fighting for Alaska with Sarah Palin, but it doesn't seem fair since she never finished the job.
MARK SHIELDS: Oh!
SREENIVASAN: To which she has now begun quoting Margaret Thatcher, saying, 'hey, you know, I really admire it when these guys attack me personally.' … So what do you think, fair game?
MARK SHIELDS: Totally fair game. I mean, she quit halfway through her term. I mean, that was it. She had her moment, she had more than her 15 minutes. I doubt frankly that she is going to run, didn't she just sign a new agreement with Roger Ailes at FOX?
It seems unlikely to me that she would walk away from that with all the restrictions on outside earning with a Senate seat if she would win, which I think is unlikely.
SREENIVASAN: But she could quit the job at Roger Ailes land, right?
DAVID BROOKS: … So, she's just never showed interest in governing. So, I mean, we all have our natural interests. Mark likes -- I don't know what Mark likes. Notre Dame football? And she likes being on T.V. So, that's what she is.
