Supreme Court Strikes Down DOMA
In a dramatic slap at federal authority, a divided Supreme Court has struck down a key part of congressional law that denies to legally married same-sex couples the same benefits provided to heterosexual spouses.
"DOMA is gone. This is a major broadly written opinion, which strikes down the law on the ground that it discriminates against gay people. This isn't a decision about states' rights. This isn't a narrowly written decision. This is a decision that says the federal government, by passing DOMA, demeans those persons who are in a lawful same-sex marriage," CNN's legal correspondent Jeffrey Toobin said today.
