The release of Pope Francis’ second papal encyclical Thursday will put the political spotlight on climate change, a contentious issue the pontiff addresses head-on by urging global action to combat the Earth’s warming. And that unequivocal stance from the progressive pope could complicate matters for Catholic presidential candidates with opposing views, all of them Republicans.
A draft of the encyclical, an official document sent to all bishops of the Catholic Church, was leaked earlier this week by the Italian magazine L’Espresso. In the papal letter, Francis says it is “urgent and pressing” for world leaders to take action to protect the environment by...

A majority of American voters would support a Supreme Court decision in favor of constitutional protections for same-sex marriage, according to a new poll.
The poll, released by Quinnipiac University on Monday, shows that 56 percent of voters would back the court if it rules to allow gay couples to marry, while just 38 percent said they would oppose it.
The court is expected to rule later this month in Obergefell v. Hodges on whether the 14th Amendment requires states to authorize and perform same-sex marriages, as well as recognize those already carried out in other states.
The new numbers underscore a national trend showing support for and acceptance of gay marriage increasing nationwide....

As Martin O’Malley prepares to launch his longshot bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, the former Maryland governor now has a super PAC supporting him.
Generation Forward PAC officially launched on Thursday, two days before O’Malley is set to declare his candidacy in Baltimore, where he was mayor for seven years.
The political action committee gives O’Malley’s campaign a shot in the arm, boosts his credibility and puts him on more of an equal playing field with his rivals in both parties, a majority of whom already have super PACs aiding their candidacies.
The super PAC will be governed by O’Malley confidantes Damian O’Doherty, a longtime...

With a Supreme Court decision expected next month on constitutional protections for same-sex marriage, one presidential candidate is not mincing words when criticizing what he sees as judicial overreach.
Specifically, the court is expected to rule on whether the 14th Amendment requires states to authorize same-sex marriages, as well as recognize those already carried out in other states. For Mike Huckabee, this is a clear case of the justices acting beyond the authority granted to them.
“Many of our politicians have surrendered to the false god of judicial supremacy, which would allow black-robed and unelected justices the power to make law as well as enforce it,” the former...

Two watchdog groups are asking the Department of Justice to investigate former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for possible campaign finance violations.
The groups, Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center, allege that Bush and his Right to Rise super PAC are “engaged in a scheme to allow unlimited contributions to be spent directly on behalf of the Bush campaign and thereby violate the candidate contribution limits enacted to prevent corruption and the appearance of corruption,” they wrote in a letter to the DOJ.
Bush, who is not yet an officially declared candidate, is purposely delaying his entry into the race to mask the appearance of “knowing and willful” campaign...

Justice Department lawyers representing the State Department say the first batch of documents will be posted on State’s Freedom of Information Act website June 30, with “rolling productions” disclosed every two months.
“The Department is keenly aware of the intense public interest in the documents and wants to get releasable materials out as soon as possible,” the lawyers wrote in the court filing. “Furthermore, the Department will continue to explore ways to devote more resources to...

The former Hewlett-Packard CEO addressed the South Carolina Republican Legislative Caucus, while the former secretary of state spoke to the state legislature’s Democratic Women’s Caucus and the state’s Democratic Women’s Council.
Although Fiorina has attempted to separate herself from the crowded 2016 Republican field with spirited attacks on Clinton, she denied that she was following Clinton here, telling reporters she’d been scheduled to...

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says Rand Paul is unfit for the presidency after the Kentucky senator blamed Republican “hawks” for the existence and rise of the Islamic State.
“ISIS exists and grew stronger because of the hawks in our party who gave arms indiscriminately [to Syrian rebels], and most of those arms were snatched up by ISIS,” the 2016 GOP presidential candidate said on “Morning Joe” Wednesday morning.
Those comments provide a stark contrast to the view of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, another presidential aspirant who argues that the U.S.’s unwillingness to engage anti-Assad militants in Syria emboldened ISIS, and that Paul’s...
