WASHINGTON — Fifty years after John F. Kennedy’s assassination, he remains an object of almost universal admiration. And yet, particularly this year, his legacy has aroused the ire of debunkers who complain that Kennedy is unworthy of all this adulation.

When President Obama first unveiled his gun control proposals recommending a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and better background checks, there seemed to be momentum behind the effort. But then the proposals ran into a wall. Despite overwhelming public backing, those ideas aren't about to become law anytime soon.

There's a reason for that, and it isn't so much powerful interests groups or political money, though those are symptoms. The fundamental issue is our culture. Why do so many Americans, 70 million-80 million according to estimates, see a need to own firearms?

The hundred years' war over national health insurance is coming to an end. Or is it? Even if Congress passes a bill in January, as seems very likely, the fight won't end. While the results of the law play themselves out over the next few years, we will continue to hear charges and countercharges over the virtues and defects of the new system.

If the reform works as intended by expanding health insurance to an additional 30 million Americans and reducing the national debt, the Democrats will pillory the Republicans for the indefinite future. The GOP's uniform opposition—only one congressman and no Republican senators supported the bill—will make it vulnerable to charges of...

OF all America’s recent presidents, none seem to have a stronger continuing hold on the public than John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. The source of their shared appeal is not any particular program they promoted, like Social Security or civil rights, but a common impulse to encourage a belief in a better — a more prosperous, safer — America. Kennedy’s “New Frontier” and Mr. Reagan’s “Morning in America” remain inspirational reminders to see better days ahead.
