As coverage of last week’s flare-up between Bob Woodward and the White House devolved into the granular parsing of words and implications and extrapolations and possible intent, the larger point was roundly missed: the increasing pressure that White House correspondents feel when dealing with the Obama administration — to follow their narrative, to be properly deferential (!), to react to push-back by politely sitting down and shutting up.

For all the talk about our slow climb out of the worst recession since the Great Depression, this past week brought some alarming news: The unemployment rate climbed to 7.9 percent, and in the fourth quarter of 2012 the US economy shrunk again. Most distressing is the years-long trend that shows no sign of reversing: The middle class is disappearing. A 2012 study by economists at Duke University and the University of British Columbia found that nine out of every 10 jobs lost during the recession were mid-level and mid-paying — positions often eliminated due to technology.

When George Washington’s personal, annotated copy of the Constitution sold last week for $9.8 million at auction in New York, it didn’t just set a record. It allowed us to see, for the first time, how cautiously our first president assumed the office, his eyes not toward history but the future.“This shows that he let the presidency define him, rather than for him to define the presidency,” says Edward Lengel, military historian and author of two books on Washington. “He was a man who thought scrupulously, and he was very concerned with precedent. He understood that his own approach would define how his successors approached the presidency.”

This summer, something remarkable happened: 45,000 Verizon workers went on strike, and no one — save a few customers dealing with service interruptions — much cared. The communications behemoth wanted more than 100 concessions on health care, pensions, sick days and outsourcing. Unions representing the workers said Verizon sought to void 50 years of collective-bargaining gains for middle-class workers, despite posting a 2.8% jump in revenue in the second quarter, up to $27.5 billion.

Posted: 4:01 amMarch 29, 2009 The number alone is staggering: Over 4 million babies born in the US in 2007 -- exceeding levels seen during the baby boom, more live births than ever in our recorded history. This statistic and its accompanying data, released by the US Department of Health and Human Services, seems to tell several stories. For example: More single women had babies than ever, and the same holds true for older women. Caesarean births rose by 2%, marking the 11th consecutive year that these rates have increased. Latinos had more babies than any other ethnic group, and the states with the highest birth rates are border states: California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico. It would seem...
